History of Coffee

I love to have my coffee first thing in the morning. Nothing special here in fact. Who does not like a fresh brewed cup of coffee in the morning? Well maybe few person do not but I would say most people do appreciate that hot drink and not only in the morning... But where does it come from? Coffee, does it have an history?

The historyofcoffee, while hard to verify to accuracy, is the legend of a sheepherder who experienced the properties of coffee when he was paying attention to his sheep. When they ate a certain type of berry off a plant, his sheep became really agitated. So he decided to try it too, and reacted the same way. Rumour has it that a monk advised him to be cautious of the devil's fruit. Nevertheless, it was also believed that the monks used the fruit to keep away from sleeping and pray.

Another wide spread legend claims an Arabian was expatriated to the desert. He boiled and ate an unknown plant. Only with the plant, he was able to survive in the desert. Some persons residing in community close by believed the survival was a spiritual sign. They named the plant Mocha, after that village, community.

Origin of Coffee Plant

Few people realize the coffee plant originally grew only in Ethiopia. They wrapped it in animal fat to eat while on raids. It started growing after transported to, and they took control of the market. The first to drink it were the Turks. For a sweeter taste, they added cinnamon and clove. Through Venetian trade merchants, coffee founds its way to Europe. Rumours of the taste of coffee began to surface all over. The Arab's keep an even tighter grip on the coffee plants. Christian's started saying coffee was the devil's drink, just like the monk story above. Pope Vincent III decided to try it. He really liked it. Talk of banishing coffee went away after that.

Coffee Houses

Soon after, coffee houses were built all over Europe. They became a popular place to hang out and drink coffee. Coffee traveled to Americas in the 1700's. An infantry captain from France brought a small plant with him. That plant was cultivated, and whitin 50 years, more than 19 million of coffee trees were planted. Coffee was confirmed as the national drink of the United States in a protest of the extreme taxes on tea from Britain.

Coffee Today

Now, millions of people get pleasure from their coffee during the day. Coffee is sold in a lot of brands and a lot of flavors. At most any grocery store, you can buy ground coffee or coffee beans. There are also gourmet coffees to choose from. Starbuck's Coffee, a million dollars business, is offering you the convenience of coffee any way you want it.
